Honoring Virginia Lee Burton: A Family Arts Celebration

Cape Ann families and visitors are invited to join in an exciting special event, "Honoring Virginia Lee Burton: A Family Arts Celebration," on Saturday, September 25 from Noon to 3 p.m. At this event, visitors will have the unique opportunity to explore the grounds of Folly Cove designer and author Virginia Lee Burton on 1255 Washington Street where she created her timeless children's books.

Some of the special arts activities planned for the event include:

"Bring your camera!
This and many more will be at this event"
  • touring the grounds of the beautiful Gloucester home of Virginia Lee Burton
  • taking pictures with large wood cutouts of book characters Little House, Katy the Snowplow, and Mike Mulligan's Steam Shovel, Mary Anne
  • block printing activities for all children with Art Haven from noon - 2:30 p.m.
  • art projects for adults with Valerie McCaffrey
  • Drama games with JoJo from the children's television show, JoJo's DreamCart at 12:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.

  • For art lovers and collectors, there will be a silent auction to bid on a rare framed print of an original Virginia Lee Burton linoblock; the printing is donated by the Sarah Elizabeth Shop of Rockport and the framing is donated by artist Valerie McCaffrey.
  • Guests can view videos of "Folly Cove Designers" and "A Sense of Place" and DVDs of these programs as well as children's books will be available for purchase.

Bring a blanket and plan a picnic or enjoy light snacks that will be available to purchase. The suggested donation is $5-$10 per family to benefit Cape Ann TV. The event will be a fun and enjoyable way to celebrate the work of a beloved local author and her life in the City of Gloucester.

This family arts celebration will be held rain or shine and a CATA shuttle bus will transport visitors from the St. Paul Lutheran Church, 1123 Washington Street, Gloucester to and from the grounds - no parking is available at the site.

The event will benefit Cape Ann Television, a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit public access television station that offers many educational and training programs and resources to the Cape Ann communities. We invite everyone to share in what should be a very memorable event! For more information, call Cape Ann TV at 978-281-2443.
